Compassion: where does it come from and where does it go to?

Recent enquiries have revealed significant deficits in compassionate care within the National Health Service. This is particularly surprising given the fundamental professional ethos of the healthcare professions. It raises questions of where does compassion come from in the first place and how is it lost. We will examine some of the genetic and environmental influences which may determine the answer to these questions.
